On Tuesday, November 2nd, SafeAssign service was temporarily interrupted. Though the service was quickly restored and storage capacity increased, there remains a backlog of papers that are queued for processing. The SafeAssign system is expected to be completely caught up by Tuesday, November 9th. |
| 11/3/2010 | |
Adobe Connect Pro will be unavailable starting November 5th at 5:00 PM Eastern until November 6th at 11:00 PM Eastern due to maintenance. |
| 11/2/2010 | |
We are continuing to implement an automated process that we successfully piloted in Fall 2010. The automated process will be used to create over 4,000 course shells in preparation for upcoming semesters. This process will start soon!
As part of the auto-creation process, Blackboard Instructors will be notified once their courses become accessible and are ready for content to be added. The email will also include:
- Instructions for course copy and other tips to get the course started.
- Contact information for requesting Co-Instructors, Teaching Assistants, cross-listing and combining courses.
Please check back often for updates!

SafeAssign News Update
Blackboard has announced that there will be scheduled maintenance for SafeAssign that is required in order to address performance issues that we have experienced over the last few weeks. The University of Kentucky Blackboard system will be available while work is being done to SafeAssign, only SafeAssign will not be available.
The 30 minute downtime is planned for today, Wednesday October 13th at 11:00 pm.
Please be aware that during this downtime, no papers can be submitted and SafeAssignments will not be available for edit or grading (users will receive errors when attempting these actions). Papers that are in process when servers are shut down will remain in queue and will resume processing once SafeAssign is back online.
We regret any inconvenience that this downtime may cause to Faculty and Students. If you have questions about this news update contact the UKIT Customer Service Center at 218-HELP (4357) or email helpdesk@uky.edu. |

SafeAssign News Update
Many of our Instructors have embraced the use of plagiarism checking building blocks within Blackboard. This is a tool that, as it has grown in popularity, has become essential to many of our Instructors.
Due to this increase in usage, there are two intermittent SafeAssign issues that the University of Kentucky has been experiencing: extended time to receive submission results and errors when submitting papers or accessing submissions.
Extended time to receive submission results.
1. Processing time for SafeAssign increases during peak usage times. During these times, it may take a few minutes or several hours to process.
2. Any submissions that are in the queue to process do not need to be re-submitted.
Intermittent errors when submitting papers or accessing submissions.
1. Occasionally users receive error messages when attempting to submit during peak usage times.
2. Submissions that result in these error messages need to be re-submitted.
3. Our vendor is working to increase server capacity.
We are continuing to make the necessary adjustments needed to keep SafeAssign a reliable tool.

| 9/29/2010 | |
There is an issue with the SafeAssign Building Block within Blackboard. This issue is causing our access to the SafeAssign site to become intermittently unavailable.
Though these periods of unavailability are usually short, they are frequent enough to cause frustration for both our Faculty and Students.
We have ticketed this SafeAssign issue with Blackboard and they are currently working to find a resolution.

Update: 1:45 pm August 6, 2010
The Blackboard auto shell creation process is working. We had some issues with the creation of the course shells automatically and that is now fixed.
If your course shell is still missing, please contact the UKIT Customer Service Center at 859-218-HELP (4357). We will then create your shell ready ASAP. |
| 7/28/2010 | |
The automated course shell process has started for Fall 2010. Courses that have an instructor of record listed in SAP for the Fall 2010 semester have been created. The instructor of record has been added to the course shell as the primary instructor.
The student enrollment for the course shells will be pulled into the course shells tomorrow morning and be there around 9 am on 7/29/2010.
An email will be going out to all of the primary instructors explaining the details and will include a FAQ document for getting the course ready for the start of the semester. |
| 7/21/2010 | | 3 pm 7/22/2010 ...... The Safe Assignment problem has been fixed. There should not be any data loss. If you have any questions, call the Help Desk at 218-4357 -- Brett McDaniel |

There is currently an issue with some Blackboard users running Firefox 3.6.x. It has been reported that during tests, students receive the error message "Access Denied" and are unable to continue. The current solution is to roll your browser back to version 3.5.10. This version is available for Windows and Mac download on UK Download. You must uninstall the newer version before you install version 3.5.10.
If you are unsure which version you are using, you can check it using the Browser Eye Chart. Click here. |
| 5/14/2010 | | So far we have had relatively few problems with the new verion of Blackboard since we updated to version 9.1. If you do run into problems please call the Help Desk at
(859) 218-HELP or (859) 218-4357.

It is critical that you have upgraded your computer system to the latest version of Java. Without the latest version you may not be able to complete the test or quiz.
To get the latest version of Java for free, go to java.com and click on the Free Java Download button. Run the installer and you will have the latest version.
Why is this critical?? Blackboard is written in Java. So an out of date version on your computer will be incompatible with the Blackboard system. |
| 4/19/2010 | | The UK Blackboard system will be updated on May 11, 2010 from midnight (12 am) and back up by 8 am. This will bring our system up to Blackboard 9.1. For more information about the update click on this link. |

| 2/18/2010 | | We have had two incidents one on Sunday 2/14 and one today 2/18 related to feeds into Blackboard from the SAP system. These incidents resulted in a temporary inability for many students to be able to access their course shells in Blackboard. We are continuing to try to find the source of the problem. In the mean time, the automatic feeds have been shut down and will be done manually.
There has not been any data loss as a result of the incidents. We apologize for any inconvenience that you may have experienced.
If you experience any issues with Blackboard, please let us know by contacting 257-1300. |
| 1/5/2010 | | The procedure for Blackboard course renewal and copy has changed. | 8/21/2009 | | TASC strongly recommends that Blackboard instructors set major project and test deadlines for 5pm (rather than midnight or other late hours) on the due date so that if a problem occurs Information Technology Customer Service Center (IT CSC) and, if necessary, specialized Blackboard technicians, have adequate time to troubleshoot the problem. (If you make that change of due date/time, please remember that it may call for an update to your syllabus.) The CSC phone number is 257-1300. Callers who are in a testing or timed situation should alert the representative early in the call. o CSC Hours are 7am-midnight M-Th; 7am-6pm Fri.; and 1pm-midnight Sunday. o Bb technicians are available 8am-5pm M-Fri. o Testing or timed situations that require a Bb tech's attention are escalated immediately. |
| 8/16/2009 | | Blackboard has been updated to the latest Service Pack. This service pack corrects several issues throughout the system, including a few performance realted fixed. If you have any questions please contact the UKIT Customer Service Center. |
| 7/27/2009 | | The way that Blackboard 9 works now is to send you a message when your course is made available. However, the course duration dates are set for the course by your instructor. You will not see the course under your courses until the start date that your instructor has selected for the start of the course for students. |
