Software Support

Introduction

This document provides information about the support provided for the various software packages on the Macintosh Computers in the Student Computing Services Labs.

Available Software

A complete list of currently available software is available in PDF format. Those wishing to use classrooms may find the classroom comparison chart useful.

Standard Software Applications and Peripherals

These applications are available on all computers and are purchased and supported by SCS. Peripherals are available either for checkout, or on specific computers in the labs. Not all peripherals are available in all labs. Lab consultants are trained in the basic operation of these applications and peripherals and should be able to provide assistance to users as needed.

  • Macintosh OS X Operating System: system preferences, opening and saving files, navigating, using the home directory and dock, connecting to servers, finding files, exporting files as PDFs
  • Apple Applications: iChat, Preview, Mail, TextEdit, and the iLife suite (iMovie, iDVD, iTunes, iPhoto)
  • Apple Utilities: Disk Utility, Apple System Profiler
  • Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Entourage
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Web browsers and associated applications such as Real Player, Flip4Mac, and QuickTime.
  • FTP and SFTP with Fetch and Fugu
  • Printers, scanners, headphones, and other peripherals located in the lab or checked out from the helpdesk.
Specialty Software Applications and Peripherals

These applications and peripherals are requested and purchased by academic departments and/or faculty members for specific use in classes or other academic pursuits. They may not be available on all computers and may be removed if the requesting department no longer needs them.

Primary support for each application and peripheral is provided by the instructor(s) who requested it. Support by SCS consultants is limited to opening, saving, printing, and the information on the SCS website and on our UK Wiki pages. Questions should be directed to the appropriate instructor. Additional support is provided via electronic manuals accessible through each application's Help menu.

Users are welcome to ask the consultant on duty for assistance, but should recognize that s/he has not been trained on these applications and may not be able to adequately answer all questions or solve all problems.

  • Adobe software other than Photoshop
  • Apple Final Cut Pro suite, including Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro, and related applications
  • Metro, Finale, and Practica Musica
  • Digital video decks and cameras, music keyboards, and Wacom tablets
