Installing and Setting Up BlackBerry Handheld

Introduction

This document is designed to assist desktop support personnel in setting up BlackBerry handheld devices for users at the University of Kentucky. This document also contains some common issues for supporting the BlackBerry device. It is strongly recommended to read the BlackBerry user manual that comes with the device before proceeding.  Please be aware that you must purchase a Blackberry Enterprise Server License from UK Communications and a Blackberry Enterprise Data Plan from your cellular provider.  These requirements apply to all personal Blackberry devices, as well as UK-owned devices.

Installing the BlackBerry Software

As long as you have purchased a Blackberry Enterprise License through Communications & Network Systems there  is no need to install the Blackberry Desktop software in order to receive your Exchange email on your Blackberry Mobile device.

Fully Charge the BlackBerry Battery

Before proceeding, you will want to charge the battery on the BlackBerry device. Devices using a USB cable will charge while the device is connected to the computer. For optimal battery performance, it is recommended to fully recharge the battery during this initial charging time. Please refer to the documentation that came with the BlackBerry handheld for more information about battery life and charging the battery.

You may continue to setup the BlackBerry during this charging time if the BlackBerry gets adequate signal strength to the cellular network while connected to your computer.

Connecting Your Blackberry Mobile to Exchange

Once your license has been purchased and IT Support notified by Communications & Network Systems, you will be added to the Blackberry Enterprise Server. This process will generate an email containing instructions on how to activate your device wirelessly using the phones data plan. You will need to enter your email address and the password provided in the activation email.

The configuration process typically takes 20-30 minutes, depending on your mobile's connection to the data network. Once complete your device will be connected to our Blackberry server and will receive new messages as they arrive in your mailbox.

Please refer to your device manual for device specific features

Sending a Test Message from Your BlackBerry

Once the BlackBerry has been registered with the cellular network, you should ensure that your BlackBerry is receiving email sent to your Exchange account. To test the email send a message from the BlackBerry to the user's Exchange email address. If the message is sent successfully, the message should arrive in the user's Exchange email mailbox and also in the BlackBerry's messages mailbox.

Before sending your test message, ensure that your BlackBerry device is in sufficient wireless coverage.

  1. From the Home screen on the BlackBerry, select the Compose icon.
  2. The To: screen appears. Select [Use Once] by scrolling the trackwheel. Click once on the trackwheel to view the menu. Scroll to and click on the Email… option. In the One Time Email screen type in the user's Exchange email address. Once you have entered the user's Exchange email address, click the trackwheel, scroll to and click Continue.
  3. In the Subject field, type a subject (such as "test") and press Enter. In the message body type "testing blackberry send and receive." Click the scroll wheel to view the menu, and then scroll to and click on Send.
  4. The Messages screen will appear. A small clock icon should appear to your sending message as it is being sent. The clock icon will be replaced with a small check mark once the message is successfully sent.

After a minute or two, you should receive the message you just sent to your Exchange account in the Messages screen as a new message. This confirms that email sent to your Exchange account is also being sent to your BlackBerry.

If you cannot send your test message, or you do not receive messages sent to your Exchange account on your BlackBerry, please contact the IT Customer Service Center.
